President Biden signs bipartisan Stand-Up Act to strengthen youth suicide prevention

In March 2022, President Biden signed a bipartisan sponsored bill to strengthen preventative measures in schools related to youth suicide. Experts say the pandemic has shown a light on pediatric mental health needs, as it created some acute mental health situations for young people. “Teachers and instructors and admins are reporting they are seeing those mental and emotional health needs walking through their school doors every day,” said Jodie Lubarsky, of Seacoast Mental Health Center.

The bill, called the Stand-Up Act provides grants to school districts for training and programs to help students experiencing social and emotional upheaval.

“The schools that will get priority for those grants are schools that are adapting best practices and really using evidence-based tools to help students navigate this very difficult time,” bill c-sponsor Maggie Hassan said.
